Israel Heart Society - Portfolio

The Israel Heart Society (IHS) was founded in 1952 in Haifa and currently has 659 active members.

Aims of the Society:

To enhance the professional and scientific knowledge of therapy and prevention of heart diseases in Israel.

IHS is a formal society of the Israel Medical Association, and acts as a formal representative of the cardiology community in Israel as recognized by its scientific committee.

IHS is a formal member of:
European Society of Cardiology (ESC)
World Heart Federation (WHF)
 
IHS board consists of: President, President elect, past President, Secretary General, and
4 Board members representing middle, south, north, and Jerusalem chapters, representative of cardiac surgery and pediatric cardiology.

IHS has 11 very active Working Groups each headed by a Chairman and Secretary:

  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Intensive Cardiac Care
  • Electrophysiology and Pacing
  • Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Prevention
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac Imaging
  • Echocardiography
  • Cardiology in the Community
  • Heart Failure
  • Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases
  • Cardiovascular Pharmacology
  • Additionally, a committee for experimental cardiology and basic sciences

Professional activities:

  • Professional Committee for the Ministry of Health "basket" for approval of novel drugs and technologies
  • Professional screening and consultation for Ministry of Health
  • National Cardiology Board examination and certification.
  • Determining the curriculum for cardiology training.
  • Close collaboration with the European Society of Cardiology and American College of Cardiology
  • Position papers

    • 27 position papers on various aspects of cardiology
    • 10 guidelines (IHS usually adapts the guidelines published by ESC)

  • Supporting grants for young cardiologists who are presenting their original work at major cardiology scientific meetings

Research activities

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome Israeli Survey – ACSIS – a biannual survey including all hospitalized patients with ACS in all 26 Israeli hospitals.
  • ACSIS – PCI in 2010 – data on all cardiac interventions performed in patients included in main ACSIS
  • Valvular and coronary intervention registries – in collaboration with the ESC
  • Heart failure survey
  • Electrophysiology devices registry
  • Trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) registry

SCIETIFIC ACTIVITIES:

IHS and its working groups conduct several scientific meetings. In 2010, 40 different scientific meeting took place
The Annual IHS Conference takes place in April-May with collaboration of the Cardiac surgery and pediatric cardiology societies. It is attended by approximately
1500 cardiologists and non-cardiologists, nurses, technicians, and allied health professionals. The conference feature numerous high-level scientific presentations in all fields of cardiology and cardiac surgery and is usually honored by several invited distinguished international speakers who participate in 3 joint sessions: IHS-ACC; IHS–ESC; and IHS –  AFICARDIO (French cardiologists).

Friends of the IHS Association (FIHSA):

founded in 2005 and consists of many senior world-renowned cardiologists from USA and Canada with an aim is to promote cardiovascular research in Israel and the collaboration with North American cardiologists.

Professional collaborations:

  • IHS is full member of the European Society of cardiology. All IHS members are automatically full ESC members and many Israeli cardiologists serve in senior positions within the ESC.
  • new Israeli Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) has just been established.
